A Legacy Worth Remembering
Today is a day to remember and reflect on what it means to be remembered.
Today is a day to remember and reflect on what it means to be remembered.
I’ve lost several loved ones over the years which can feel painful at times, but not during this time of year. I celebrate the memories of my departed loved ones today. We’ll get to dine with them. We’ll raise a glass and drink with them. Our altars—our ofrendas—lit by candlelight and lined with marigolds, will lead the way home once again. Today is a joyful day of memory. It’s not a day for sadness. It’s a day for the celebration of lives we were fortunate enough to encounter. It’s a day to remember all of the joy they brought us.
Our altars—our ofrendas—lit by candlelight and lined with marigolds, will lead the way home once again.
We remember their jokes and laughter over the family fool or memories of running the house around recording faux interviews with the family dog. We remember a great-grandfather whose legacy is ever so faint, but still hanging on and the first friend you met when you arrived in the big city. We remember the friend whose thundering laughter continues to echo in our ears. We remember the matriarch who taught you much about the meaning of beauty and art and the gnome-loving maternal figure who was more present than your own mother. Today is a day to reflect on the legacies we all leave when we pass. How will we light up that altar someday? Will we do good for our loved ones, ending up on their ofrendas as the window of a life worth remembering? Today is a day to think about all of it. Today is a day to remember and reflect on what it is to be remembered. Today is theirs. Today is ours. Today is yours. Today is for everyone… even the living, lest they forget those who also once lived.
