Origin

According to the Washington Post, National Best Friends Day has a complicated history. First mentioned in a 2007 Chicago Tribune article by writer Mary Wisniewski, the holiday may have originated on EarthCalendar.net, a user-submitted holiday calendar. The Washington Post was unable to find the submitter.

Later, now-defunct online outlet BFF.tv used Best Friends Day to promote their entertainment site. They partnered with other businesses to celebrate National Best Friends Day in Times Square in New York and received a mention on Today. The holiday soon took off, with a variety of e-commerce platforms touting gifts for #BestFriendsDay. The day was later picked up by local news stations.

Traditions

Best Friend Day is primarily celebrated online. This is a good day to post a picture of your best friend on social media and caption it with a heartfelt message of how much they mean. It is also a good time to check in and get together with friends.

What to Say

There is no official Best Friend Day greeting, but "Happy Best Friend Day" will never go wrong.
