Origin
On this date in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress, marking the country’s intent to officially separate from Great Britain. Two days prior, the Congress voted in favor of independence. Americans have celebrated their country on this day ever since. The day has been a federal holiday in the U.S. since 1870.
Traditions
The tradition of concerts, bonfires, parades and fireworks dates back to some of the very first 4th of July celebrations in the years following the signing. Today, Americans typically eat 150 million hot dogs on Independence Day.
