This awareness month is a month-long campaign intended to share information about lung cancer, including encouraging funding and uplifting the stories of lung cancer patients and families.
Origin
The first Lung Cancer Awareness Month (LCAM) occurred in November 2000, reflecting its origins in Lung Cancer Awareness Day. The first Lung Cancer Awareness Day took place on November 14, 1998. It was launched by the Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education, now known as the GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer.
In 2016, LCAM became a global campaign, with an international coalition coming together to bring awareness of lung cancer. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, in 2020, there were 2.2 million cases of lung cancer. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports lung cancer is the leading cancer death for both men and women in the United States.
Traditions
The main traditions of LCAM focus around education and advocacy. The GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer encourages people to get involved by encouraging increased funding towards lung cancer. GO2 put together a toolkit for those who want to participate in LCAM.
The CDC recommends lung cancer screening for anyone over 50 years of age who has a history of smoking or quit smoking within the last 15 years. You can learn more about lung cancer here.
