This month-long celebration raises awareness of and gives thanks to all members of the United States Armed Forces, past and present.
Origin
May is host to many military holidays, including Loyalty Day (May 1), Victory in Europe Day (May 8), Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.
In 1999, a bi-partisan committee led by Senator John McCain introduced a resolution to declare May as National Military Appreciation Month. According to the bill’s text, the month is intended to “promote national awareness” of service members and “foster the honor and respect” for those who served. The month honors every Armed Forces member, past and present, and in every branch of the military.
Traditions
During the month, many businesses offer discounts to Armed Forces members. Many nonprofits that work with service members run events during this month. The needs of active duty service members and veterans are brought to the fore during the month.
What to say
“Happy National Military Appreciation Month!” is a fine greeting during the month.
