Summary: Share a compliment, tell someone you’re happy they are in your life and generally use your words for good on this day. Author Mitch Carnell wrote the book Say Something Nice - Be a Lifter @ Work and created the holiday in 2006. Carnell told the radio show Marketplace that the process was easy enough: he submitted the idea to Chase’s, an almanac dedicated to niche holidays, and they accepted it. The Post, Ohio University’s student newspaper, noted the day really took off in 2017, when Stephen Colbert promoted the holiday on YouTube.
What to say: There is no traditional greeting for Say Something Nice Day. Instead, give someone a compliment to celebrate.
