World Alzheimer’s Month is a month-long campaign to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and support for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.
Origin
Although there has been a World Alzheimer’s Day since 1994, the first World Alzheimer’s Month didn’t occur globally until 2011. Like World Alzheimer’s Day, World Alzheimer’s Month was launched by the World Health Organization and Alzheimer’s Disease International, a not-for-profit federation of Alzheimer’s and dementia-related organizations.
Alzheimer’s Disease International says the pressure of a global awareness month sends a “strong message” to leaders and governments about the impact of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
When it is observed
World Alzheimer’s Day occurs on September 21, which is why September was chosen for World’s Alzheimer’s Month.
Traditions
Each World Alzheimer’s Month has a theme. The theme for 2022 was “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s.” The 2022 theme was intended to draw attention to those with Alzheimer’s and their family in the wake of a diagnosis.
Alzheimer’s Disease International says those who wish to acknowledge the month can participate by donating to Alzheimer’s causes and by sharing messages on social media. Many people wear purple during World Alzheimer’s Month, a color associated with the Alzheimer’s Association.
What to do
There is no traditional greeting for World Alzheimer’s Month. If you are interested in knowing more about Alzheimer’s, resources like alzheimers.gov and the Alzheimer’s Association can help.
