Origin

World Cancer Day began in 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer. Spearheaded by the Union for International Cancer Control, the Summit focused on cancer as a global issue worthy of a global response. World Cancer Day reminds us that cancer is a worldwide issue. It also focuses on cancer treatment, intervention and health equity.

Traditions

As an awareness holiday, there are no celebratory rituals associated with World Cancer Day. Non-profits, governmental bodies and activism groups participate in World Cancer Day. Organizations may hold educational workshops and promote early cancer screening. There are also awareness campaigns launched on this day to promote treating cancer as a worldwide disease.

What to say

There is no traditional greeting for World Cancer Day. To recognize it, educate yourself on cancer-related issues and health inequality. If possible, get cancer screenings and promote early intervention to those who may be at risk.
